So, the previous post on Hadid’s 1000 Museum project may not have ultimately been so kind, it would probably be fair to offer some well deserved higher praise for one of the architects other projects that may just be right on. 520 West 28th Street (West Chelsea), is a relatively small building clocking in at only 180,000 square feet and 39 apartments, designed in an “L” shape which provides visually stunning swoops and curves both for the building mass itself and also along the individual floors and even the facade – a layer and folded mobius strip. So here’s what gets me all excited about the building in particular – – – beautiful balconies!!! As anyone who has lived in NYC for any amount of time will tell you, any type of outside space is cherished beyond belief, having a tiny five by six balcony is considered the peak of luxury and indulgence and cause for a cocktail party with even the slightest hint of okay weather. While it would be criminal to see NYC have the types of white boxes with wrap arounds that are the standard in South Florida, the city is in need of gracefully crafted apartments with nice functional outdoor space. Well done Hadid and may other designers / developers take a cue from your efforts.
